Fostering Connection and Belonging for Elderly Chinese Immigrants

A Masters Thesis by Yifan Zhang

Index

Thesis Focus

This thesis investigates the challenges faced by elderly Chinese immigrants in maintaining their cultural identity and sense of belonging in a new environment. As individuals transition into unfamiliar settings, the design of spaces, tools, and social systems often neglects the importance of cultural connection and emotional well-being. What happens when traditions fade, routines are disrupted, and community ties weaken? This overlooked aspect of the immigrant experience fosters isolation, displacement, and a loss of identity. What are the ways design can bridge the gap between tradition and adaptation?

Cultural continuity holds transformative potential. By preserving heritage and fostering belonging, we empower individuals to maintain their identities even in unfamiliar surroundings. Design becomes a tool for reconnection, turning isolation into integration. This shift is essential. As globalization accelerates, traditional practices risk being overshadowed by homogenized systems. In communities worldwide, like those of elderly Chinese immigrants, cultural traditions are not just memories—they are lifelines that connect people to their roots and each other. We cannot afford to let these connections weaken. They carry the resilience and humanity needed to create inclusive, empathetic futures.
