This thesis examines the gap between the limited communication tools drivers have and the complex, nuanced situations they navigate every day.
Driving demands constant negotiation, coordination, and split-second decision-making, yet the language of the road remains blunt. With only a horn, turn signals, and hazard lights, there is little room to express intention, gratitude, apology, or care. The result is frustration, miscommunication, and unnecessary chaos.
As vehicles become increasingly automated, we are also losing the tactile connection that once made us attentive and engaged drivers. This work explores how manual communication tools and more intentional driver education can expand the road’s vocabulary, restore agency, and foster safer, more thoughtful driving.
The goal is simple: transform noise into nuance and chaos into clarity.
